DTWW / word wrap

I'd like to pick up the discussion of the "DTWW" feature which was dropped back in 2005, because we were too close to the 22.1 release back then for this to be included.

This feature displays lines wrapped at word boundaries rather than at the right boundary of the window, while keeping the underlying buffer unchanged. In some cases, it would be a welcome alternative for longlines-mode (e.g. for editing text), in other cases it would make the display of code in narrow windows more pleasant without actually destroying the underlying formatting.

Kim's patch basically demonstrated the effect back then, but needed more work. Is there a chance such a feature could be developed over the next months?

That is what you get if you set the wrap-column to t.

OK, but how to keep track of the horizontal cursor position?

That's a generic problem which is not related to DTWW.

By the way, I just noticed that with window-wrap-column turned on
(and not wrapping anything in the above two lines), I cannot jump
down from 1 to 2 - the point always ends up in the line afterwards.
Let me know if I should investigate further in case you can't
reproduce.

I'm not going to work on DTWW this side of the release (unless RMS
says it is ok to add for 22.1). I don't have much time and want
to focus on finalizing the release.

We can add DTWW just after the release so it will be well tested
before we release 23.x
