I can't reproduce this problem on my Fedora machine.

FWIW, I can't either, on Ubuntu 7.04.

I can reproduce this with:
GNU Emacs 23.0.50.1 (i686-pc-linux-gnu, GTK+ Version 2.10.14, multi-tty)
of 2007-09-01.

Please try with gtk+ 2.10.14.

I did, and failed to reproduce. Those that can reproduce it must try to debug it more. Something else is different.
