    I do not follow.

`jit-lock-function' is called from the hook `fontification-functions',
which is run from `handle_fontified_prop', which is called when
there is a change in the `fontified' property.  So it seems that everything
is caontrolled by that property.

Did I misunderstand that code?

                      I have a pretty good idea of how jit-lock could be
    modified to provide just the necessary functionality.

How would you modify it?
