read-passwd and its use of read-char-exclusive

Hi,

Is there a good reason why read-passwd calls message to display
an updated prompt and then 
passes nil as the prompt argument to read-char-exclusive?

Would make things easier  with respect to generating spoken
feedback if that prompt were passed to read-char-exclusive as its
prompt argument.
