Yes, against. You are designing a complicated interface for a non-problem.
You will introduce more problems than those you think you see today. Code
cannot reasonably attempt to deal with all likely uses of the echo area in a
sophisticated DWIM fashion.

Please just leave it alone - it ain't broke.
