23.0.50; MulTTY Breakage On Linux Console:

There is still one edge case where emacsclient breaks --- and it
also happens to be the common situation for someone running
outside X -- see details below.

Run Emacs on a Linux console --- either inside or outside screen.
Make sure there are no other emacsclient sessions running on
other ttys.
Do the following:

M-x shell
emacsclient foo 
(the above is how programs like svn etc that use the EDITOR
environment variable invoke it)

You get an edit buffer as expected.
When done editing hit C-x #
Emacs signals the following error:

server-delete-client: Attempt to delete the sole active display
terminal

At this point, the edit buffer is disassociated from emacslcient
-- hitting C-x# a second time says "no server buffers".
The emacsclient that is running in the shell never returns.

The only work around I  have found is to first start emacsclient
from a second tty -- before invoking any program that uses
emacsclient through the EDITOR variable.

The desired behavior should be what used to happen before the
multi-tty patch was applied, i.e. 
emacsclient  should be usable when one  is working on a single tty.
