    Two things.

These "two things" give some information, but I am still not certain
of the answer to my question.

    1) It implements Emacs 22's version of ldap-search and
ldap-search-internal from ldap.el for use of Gnus in Emacs 21.3. The
changes are made to achieve compatibility with OpenLDAP v2 and to
make it possible to retrieve LDAP attributes that are tagged ie
       ";binary".

    2) It adds a compatibility layer for Xemacs because the ldap-search in
Emacs and in Xemacs returns its results differently.

It sounds like neither of these things is useful in Emacs >= 22.
Does that mean we can simply delete smime-ldap.el from Emacs?

I don't entirely understand "adds a compatibility layer".
