    For what it's worth, there's a possible middle ground:
    use byte-optimize rather the byte-compile.  So the code is still "normal
    elisp source code" but potentially a bit different from the original.

I don't see any major flaws with that, but I think it is cleaner
to show the expression precisely as it was in the source code.
