I often work for example with 4 branches: the 22 branch, the trunk, the
unicode branch, and my own branch with its local hacks.  I switch
between them often enough that using a single tree and switching within
the tree would be a real pain in the *** because of the need to rebuild
all the .o and .elc files after each switch.
