    I don't like the thought of trying to break up intervals.c, to binary
    search for a particular problem function, so any other suggestions are
    welcome.

Please use the binary search method if you don't find another way.

The only other method I know of is to debug the problem and localize
the incorrect execution to a particular piece of code.  By comparison,
the binary search method is much easier.
