The multi-tty code was first written as a kind of "fork" of Emacs.
It included various changes that were just preferences of the author
(e.g. the way the emacsclient interface was changed).

Part of the integration of the code involved splitting the patch into
the multi-tty functionality and the "user preferences".  This was not
done very well, AFAICT and several changes were applied later on to
revert some parts of the multi-tty merge (I am personally familiar with
the emacsclient/server.el part of it).

The multi-tty change is not different from any other: if there's a part
which you find dubious, please bring it up here so we can fix it
(either reverting that part of the change, or adding comments to better
explain it, ...).

Notice that it's not too late to revert parts of the multi-tty merge.
