On my Windows build, ASCII chars are

 -outline-Courier New-normal-normal-normal-mono-13-*-*-*-m-*-iso10646-1

but the euro sign is shown with

  -outline-Arial Unicode MS-normal-normal-normal-sans-13-*-*-*-p-*-jisx0208-sjis

and ä, é, etc are shown with

  -outline-Courier New-normal-normal-normal-mono-13-*-*-*-m-*-windows-1258

Weird.
