[An instance started with
EMACS_FONT_LOG=1 /usr/local/src/emacs/src/emacs -q \
-fn '-misc-fixed-medium-r-normal--20-200-75-75-c-100-iso8859-1'
[I said that the splash screen shows
xft:-bitstream-Bitstream Vera
Sans-normal-normal-normal-*-20-*-*-*-*-0-iso10646-1 (#x51)
[and Handa-san replied]
??? What's wrong with it? If you specify a font of
20-pixelsize, the font for variable-pitch should be
20-pixelsize too.
I thought that specifying a fixed width font as a command line argument
would lead to fixed width through out. It doesn't. No matter; I hardly
ever look at the splash screen anyhow. To my eyes, with a
variable-pitch font on my screen, it looks perfectly well.

For a character of which buffer is it shown? And, do you
mean that it should be something else?
For ~/.emacs-simple. The font is correct.
Indeed, I am using
today's GNU Emacs CVS, Mon, 2008 Jul 14 10:20 UTC
GNU Emacs 23.0.60.8 (i686-pc-linux-gnu, GTK+ Version 2.12.10)
as I said before, but with a more complex .emacs file, with 28 buffers,
and all is well. I am sending you this email from that instance.
Thank you again.
