This seems pretty surprising ... the sort of people that say "just use
windows" are also the sort to say "just use visual studio / notepad / ...".

In my _personal_ experience, emacs on windows has been something of a
nice tool to introduce people to the free software world.  There are
other free apps like firefox that can do this too, but there's something
fairly unique about emacs -- it's not just "a better browser" or even
just "a better editor".
