Au contraire -- I've managed to convince several customers that GPL is
actually *good for them* (I work on medium-to-small projects):

(1) They actually become *less* dependent on myself. The project lives
on if there are other people besides myself interested in its outcome

(2) If there is another commercial entity interested in this baby, my
customer will eventually reap the benefits of them improving it.

(some customers remain sceptical even in front of those arguments,
alas).

Remember: it's especially the *user* the GPL caters to.

Note that I favour the GPL on philosophical/ideological grounds. Still
it has a lot to offer to the customers on practical grounds.
