23.0.60.1; set-fontset-font doesn't work for ascii charset

run emacs without any extra settings: runemacs.exe -Q

or

(set-fontset-font (frame-parameter nil 'font)
                  'ascii  ;; or 'latin
                  (font-spec :family "Courier New" :size 17))

Neither work.


However,

(set-fontset-font
 "fontset-startup" 'chinese-gbk
 "-*-Arial Unicode MS-*-*-*-*-17-*-*-*-*-*-iso10646-1")

or

(set-fontset-font (frame-parameter nil 'font)
                  'chinese-gbk
                  (font-spec :family "Arial Unicode MS" :size 17))

Both work fine for characters in charset chinese-gbk.


If Emacs crashed, and you have the Emacs process in the gdb debugger,
please include the output from the following gdb commands:
   `bt full' and `xbacktrace'.
