Hm. Sorry. Don't know about this. Might be you have an extremely wide
window to start with?
Have a look at the variables split-height-threshold, split-width-threshold,
split-window-preferred-function.

You want to switch off transient-mark-mode. For the current session you
just say "M-x transient-mark-mode", this toggles the current setting; if
you want it permanently, "M-x customize-variable RET transient-mark-mode"
and follow the instructions.
