emacs --daemon problems (23.0.91)

I'm trying out emacs --daemon on 23.0.91.  Last night started on 2 machines.

This morning tried to reconnect to #1, and it was dead.  I'm guessing that 
it died when the client was shutdown?

Machine #2 the server wasn't dead, but didn't function.  Connecting to it, 
all I got was a blank window.  No attempt to get it's attention, such as C-g 
did anything.  Finally had to kill it.
