    The gnulib maintainer said it's not trivial, the gnulib infrastructure
    has changed.

"The gnulib infrastructure has changed" is very general.
What is the change that makes this difficult?

My suggestion is to get the latest version of these facilities
from gnulib and change Emacs to use them.  Why would any change
in gnulib interfere with that?
