Unable to build trunk

I am unable to build trunk on Ubuntu 10.10. bootstrap-emacs terminates
with *** stack smashing detected ***. I did not find anything
appropriate on the mailing list archives, so I assume this is fairly
new or triggered by something peculiar to my system.
