I generally use Funtoo GNU/Linux with OpenBox. There's some Gnome 
dependencies, but not too much. Not everybody are using Gnome, some 
Emacs users prefer light desktops. Increasing those dependencies is a 
bad thing for them.

Sorry to be off topic but Steve Yegge talked about the future of Emacs 
three years ago, I found his post rather brilliant, especially the 
"Emacs/Firefox integration", I always wondered what Emacs developers are 
thinking about this:
