There are none at all, because there are no Linux distros.  The
distros you are thinking of are GNU/Linux distros.  Please give us
credit for our work, by calling them "GNU/Linux distros".

    However, testing for /var/mail is not sufficient to determine if
    a local MTA has been configured/setup.

I believe you, but what I suggested wasn't testing for /var/mail.
It was testing for a bounce message in /var/mail.
