smtpmail stopped working with gmail

[T.V. Raman]

Does not work == get a message saying starttls failed to start.
I turned on smtp debugging but the trace buffer was empty so
Icouldn't make any progress tracking it down. And since Ineeded
to be able  to send email I rolled back,
