Yes. 

This is what is happening.

And in a previous message to James, I pointed
directly to this:

Therefore, for the Summary buffer paragraph
direction should be locked into left-to-right --
not nil.

And to get the formatting (alignment) right, any field
in gnus-summary-line-format that could be R2L
needs the LRM. As it can mess other fields -- as
previously shown.
