Regarding using LRM or text-properties for Gnus summary fields:

Maybe we can do better, but we're in feature freeze so anything that
needs a new feature from the bidi code is just not an option for 24.1.
There are enough other problems in the current bidi support to keep
Eli busy.

This said, I encourage other people to try and add some alternative
solution (such as adding a text property that can override the
bidi-class of the characters it covers, so you can have a "segment
separator" which is not a TAB), to see how well it works.  That will
also hopefully bring more eyes on the bidi code, which can't hurt.
