Martin recently introduced the command names

   split-window-above-each-other ->  C-x 2
   split-window-side-by-side     ->  C-x 3

for which split-window-{vertically|horizontally} are now aliases.

How about:

split-window-and-stack-horizontally
split-window-and-stack-vertically

or

split-window-and-arrange-horizontally
split-window-and-arrange-vertically

split-window-left-right
split-window-top-bottom

+1

whilst I rather kept the old forms as are, introducing the new as aliases

Cheers,

Andreas
