If we're talking about Emacs, "2002-2012" is a
true statement, is acceptable, and is what the
GNU coding standards currently recommend.
New versions of Emacs were published (at least via
a revision-control system) in all those years, and
there's a "NOTE ON COPYRIGHT YEARS" in the README
file that explains all this, so the GNU rules are being
followed for copyright years if the file says just
"2002-2012".
