Thanks.  Unfortunately, "bzr fast-import" on the resulting export hits
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bzr-fastimport/+bug/730876 and aborts:

  bzr: ERROR: An inconsistent delta was supplied involving u'examples',

  reason: repeated path
