Is this with emacs -Q or some special setting?  For me with emacs -Q, C-SPC
exits Isearch, setting the mark, and nothing more.

Yes, I can then pop the mark to get back where I was, but C-SPC itself does not
do anything like what C-g does, AFAICT.
