I have followed up at <http://bugs.gnu.org/bug=14474#29> by suggesting that DBUS_SESSION_BUS_ADDRESS be set to the empty string if it's not already set and if gtk is being used. The empty string is the shortest dummy address I could think of; if some other string would be a better choice, please let me know.
