Well, there's the fundamental difference between lexical and dynamic
scoping:

While you can have

   &%%(blabla date blabla)

you can't have

   &%%(my-cal-fun)

where my-cal-fun is defined in your .emacs as

   (defun my-cal-fun () (blabla date blabla))
