IRIX machines are indeed old and SGI dropped support for IRIX in December, so if IRIX is the main issue I suggest following suit and removing support from the Emacs trunk.
AIX and HP-UX are still alive though, and they run on newer machines (e.g., POWER7+, Itanium Poulson) where wide-int should work reasonably well. Emacs runs on AIX (see Bug#14258) and on HP-UX (see Bug#16717) and I doubt whether users on those platforms nowadays will much care whether wide-int is used.
