Some time ago I proposed full zlib/bz2/xz (de)compression support. IIRC Stefan has rejected it to avoid creeping featurism and extra external library dependencies; see https://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/emacs-devel/2013-08/msg00564.html. Dmitry
