git does provide the describe option:

3:39 address@hidden/x86_64 [emacs.git/address@hidden >git describe --tags
emacs-24.4-40-ga3d0e80

This tells me my current head is 40 commits above the emacs-24.4 tag
with a shortened commit-ish for unambiguous identity.
