Eli's point about ELF is a pretty strong objection to that idea.

Also, looking down the road, the GnuTLS folks seem like they don't want to let Emacs be in charge of memory allocation; they want to use talloc, which as far as I know is not compatible with Emacs memory allocation. This sounds like it could be a problem.

I guess I'm not fully understanding the problem they're trying to fix. What if we required that gnutls_global_set_mem_functions be called only when gnutls_global_initialized is zero? Wouldn't this requirement fix the problem? Emacs could live with that.
