Then the quote translation won't have any meaningful impact on the 
observed behavior one way or the other.

But if it's such a problem, don't use quotes in the examples.

If you think the translation behavior is hard for a user to understand, 
why not revert the whole rigamarole? It doesn't add *that* much value.
