I see Ted, Artur and I are converging toward an area of agreement. I think we
need three things now:

  1. Research `display-warning' and see how it fits in. I very much agree
     there should be a unified interface for all of these cases.

  2. Work out the API details privately, now that it's getting down to
     minutia, and come back to the list with a unified proposal.

  3. Post this proposal on the Wiki and invite comments for a second round of
     discussion.
