I may have misunderstood you, Eli, but I don't think this would work: the Emoji 
in the fonts that I was discussing are not monochrome.
On the other hand, it is quite possible to leverage Emacs' support for inline 
graphics to replace certain unicode characters or character sequences with 
multicolor image renditions.
