You may have solved the problem long ago, but for what's it worth I have 

(setq mail-archive-file-name (expand-file-name
"/path/to/a/directory/OUT"))

in my ~/.emacs, which FCC's all outgoing email to a file I call OUT. I've
done this for a couple of years without any problems.
