People have presented complicated workflows, saying those are required
to install any patch in ELPA, and that this makes using ELPA a pain.
Those did seem so complicated that it would be a pain in the neck to
do this.

Are those complicated workflows for "subtree" packages only?
Does using an "external" package avoid the problem?
