I appreciate the reasoning, and in Lisp mode 'S' for "symbol" is
probably more mnemonic than `C-h C-i'.
But info-lookup-symbol is extremely useful in a lot of other modes --
for example Perl, LaTeX, Octave, Texinfo and C (libc) where Info files
are available (see the end of info-look.el for more examples).
For a Lisp programmer S(ymbol) is of course an obvious mnemonic, but I
don't think it's very intuitive for someone editing, say, a LaTeX file.
A possibility could be to swap the key bindings for `describe-syntax'
and `info-lookup-symbol'. `C-h s' (lower case s) is much easier to
type, and I don't believe `describe-syntax' is used nearly as frequently
as `info-lookup-symbol' (I still personally prefer `C-h C-i', though).
