auto-compression-mode and info don't play ball

Please describe exactly what actions triggered the bug
and the precise symptoms of the bug:

I have a compressed Info file
/usr/share/info/cfengine2-Reference.info.gz.  It has a dir entry.

I say "emacs -q -no-site-file", then C-h i, then C-s to search for
the entry, then RET on it.  Works.

I kill the info buffer, do M-x auto-compression-mode RET (which
enables it), then C-h i d, search for the cfengine2-Reference entry,
hit RET on it.  Then I get this backtrace:
