I actually doubt xml.el would be faster, and certainly not more
complete. This was initially written in one single afternoon, so I
didn't pay too much attention to the details. I just needed something at
the time...

I have contacted a few of the persons that have made contributions in
the past to see if they would be interested to become the maintainer...
