I think the best way to handle renaming of `.' is to allow it but
update the buffer in a special way afterwards. Instead of updating
the line for `.', it would update the variables and lines that record
the directory name of the directory.
Renaming `..' ought to be prohibited, I think.
Would you like to write the code?
