That patch seems to be an improvement. However, what is unfortunate
with the recent changes, is that now many reasonable dired operations
   don't work anymore on ".", "..", like

   S runs the command dired-do-symlink
   H runs the command dired-do-hardlink
   M runs the command dired-do-chmod
   G runs the command dired-do-chgrp
   O runs the command dired-do-chown
   ! runs the command dired-do-shell-command

Yes, but it definitely seems better not to be able to run these
commands on . and .. than not to be able to run them on any
directories whatsoever. I never claimed that my patch was a long term
satisfactory fix. At present, nobody seems to have the time for a
long term satisfactory fix.

In the mean time, you can do ^S, ^H, ^^S, ^^H and so on, which might
not be ideal, but work.

Frankly said, I prefer to undo the recent changes instead of
   disabling every operation on ".".

Depends on how dangerous the bug you described was, where one has to
take into account that the user might be root. I have not even looked
at your actual prolem yet. (I thought that the most urgent thing was
to be able to work on directories again.) I will take a
"just in case it was easier than I thought"-type of look at your
problem, but I do not promise anything. I do not have a huge amount
of time to invest in it myself right now either.

Sincerely,

Luc.
