Weird crash behaviour in emacs

I've had several instances in the past where CVS Emacs just crapped
out, but in most cases it was not repeatable (although running a lot
of deletions from dired often triggered it, as reported earlier this
month by Wang Chunyu).

I can now reproduce such a crash 100% of the time. If I run
'emacs src/xterm.c' (from the top of the source tree) emacs will abort
just before it displays the buffer. Running emacs and then loading
the file works just fine (no crash). It does seem sensitive to where I
am running emacs from - if I am in my build tree, the crash does not
occur for some reason. Attached is gdb output from a debug session - if
more info is needed, let me know.

It seems the problem is related to the setnu lisp package; if I do not
load it from .emacs, emacs does not crash. Nor does it crash if I remove
setnu.elc, so it seems like there might be a byte compiler issue behind
all this. The setnu package can be found here:
