Actually I think the default size should be taken from the user's
environment, if it's possible to determine that, e.g. by looking at
XTerm.font and whatever Gnome & al do (for a reasonable value of `&
al').
If Emacs can deduce you're running under Gnome, and make the widgets
consistent with how other applications appear, that's fine, but that's
not what happens, and it wasn't even clear that it's configurable.
