ange-ftp on MacOS 10.2.6

I obtained emacs for MaxOS here: http://www.webweavertech.com/ovidiu/emacs.html

I successfully open an existing remote file using ange-ftp. After 
editing the file, saving fails with the message
Wrong type argument: number-or-marker-p, nil
The existing file is in my home directory on the remote unix machine, 
with permissions 700.

Below I show the contents of the *Messages* buffer, and the *ftp...* 
buffer. The latter looks very strange to me.
