AFAIK Emacs doesn't use Fontconfig in rendering window content, only in rendering menus, etc (--with-gtk). I think window content is always rendered with the good old X core fonts.
Maybe something to mention in etc/PROBLEMS ?
We still don't have definitive clue about what's happening, so what we'll say in etc/PROBLEMS?
