terminal mode does not exit cleanly

Symptoms:

After opening a terminal in a buffer with M-x term and typing in some
commands, I stop the shell-session with C-d. Emacs then says

Process terminal finished

The buffer is still sitting around, but it is impossible to do
anything after that via the keyboard. Emacs beeps on each keystroke
and displays the message

Current buffer has no process

The only way to get out/rid of this buffer is via the mouse.
